The 'Veinte Cohol' banana plant (Musa hybrid) is an fast-maturing dwarf dessert banana variety. It is highly sought after by gardeners in temperate climates because it is the fastest fruiting banana plant available. It can produce a harvestable bunch of fruit in a single warm growing season.
The compact size makes it an excellent choice for large patio containers, decks, or small garden spaces.
Rapid Life Cycle: While standard banana varieties can take anywhere from 9 months to multiple years to ripen fruit, 'Veinte Cohol' blooms exceptionally fast.
Quick Ripening: Once the flower emerged, the fruit requires a short ripening window of only 60 to 70 days (roughly 6 weeks) to reach maturity. This allows growers in shorter-summer zones (such as USDA Zone 8) to successfully harvest fruit before the first winter freeze.
- Sunlight: Requires full to partial sun. It needs maximum sunshine to efficiently fuel its rapid growth cycle.
- Soil and Water: Thrives in rich, average, well-draining soil. It needs regular, heavy watering but should not sit in constantly waterlogged soil.
- Feeding: Because it grows at a rapid pace, it requires heavy fertilization during the active summer growing season, preferring a high-nitrogen and high-potassium formula.
- Climate Tolerance: It features great wind resistance and high heat and humidity tolerance. However, it is not cold-tolerant and will suffer severe damage or die if exposed to freezing temperatures below 32°F (0°C) without protection. Northern growers must bring container-grown plants indoors or into a garage for winter storage.
